PITTSBURGH, PA – It’s time to book your spot! Registration for the 2025 Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books is officially open, inviting readers of all ages to celebrate the love of storytelling in all its forms with an inspiring lineup of acclaimed authors and poets and engaging panel discussions, workshops, and hands-on activities. A new effort, aimed at removing barriers to literacy will be launched too.
The free event will be held May 31, 2025, at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s historic Main library in Oakland, a new and fitting home for the fourth annual Festival. As the presenting sponsor, the Library views the event as a meaningful opportunity to welcome all neighbors to unlock knowledge, discover new passions, and form connections.
Featured Authors, Poets, and Creative Sessions
This year’s Festival offers something for everyone, with over 100 writers across genres whose work champions the transformative power of storytelling. The nationally recognized, headliners include:
- Rachel Khong, author of Goodbye, Vitamin, will speak on her newest release and New York Times bestseller, Real Americans, an exhilarating novel of American identity that spans three generations in one family.
- Torrey Peters, award-winning author of Detransition, Baby, will speak on her forthcoming release, Stag Dance.
- Grammy Award-winning artist Judy Collins will read from her new poetry collection, Sometimes, Its Heaven: Poems of Loss, Love and Redemption, sponsored by The International Poetry Forum, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit which recently re-established its world-renowned influence on the art after a 14-year hiatus.
- Sharon G. Flake, a three-time Coretta Scott King award winner and author of the groundbreaking novel The Skin I’m In, will reflect on 25 years of transforming the landscape of young adult literature and discuss her latest novel, The Family I’m In.
Author talks and panel discussions provide a chance to hear from emerging literary figures, too. The sessions explore a wide range of themes — including identity, community, and belonging — offering insights to attendees as varied and vibrant as the stories being told. A full list of participating authors and poets can be found on the event website.
Interactive workshops offer attendees the chance to build skills and share ideas, further enriching the Festival experience.
- Cecily Miligan will share how she grew the Bakery Square Book Club into a thriving community of readers and what people can do to turn their monthly meetings into community-building opportunities.
- The Pittsburgh Novel Project – a platform that catalogs all known fiction and drama novels featuring the city or western Pennsylvania in a significant way – serves as a rich resource for anyone looking to explore stories set in the region. Co-creator Jake Oresick will share how it can help users discover their perfect novel.
A Tale for Every Age
A wide variety of children’s programming at the event promises to entertain, educate, and inspire the next generation of bookworms.
- Author Daniel Enrico will read his book that inspired the hit Hulu series, The Bravest Knight Who Ever Lived, and teaches the importance of being true to oneself.
- Kelly Starling Lyons and Rachel DiNunzio share their expert-writing tips to help parents make story time at home fun, sharing how they create engaging books for early readers.
- Families can also explore a tent dedicated to the Library’s 2025 Best Books for Babies, a nationally recognized guide of books for birth to 18 months old that is released every May.
- Teens can attend panels on various topics, including a discussion on the importance of writing sports narratives for everyone, especially for girls, who are often written out of the joy of sports, led by Hena Khan and Kyla Zhao.
Families can pre-register for the Library’s annual Summer Reading program, Flights of Imagination 2025, and fuel their love of reading for the months to come. The program encourages children and teens to read at least five books from June 1 to August 10 and help combat the “summer slide” they may experience during the months out of school. Adults can participate too, with high-flying prizes available. The Library challenges readers of all ages to finish 80,000 books by the end of the program.
Fostering Lifelong Literacy
The Festival also serves as the launch point for regional literacy advocacy.
Research released earlier this year highlights an opportunity to help more children and adults across Pennsylvania learn how to read and write.
During the event, the Library will announce a major initiative focused on literacy in the area, reflecting a shared commitment with the community to give all readers the tools needed to unlock their full potential.
“Literacy is a launching point for thriving in school, at work, and in life,” said Andrew Medlar, President and Director, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “At the Library, we’re creating more access to culturally relevant, awesome, and fun educational resources to help inspire a love of reading. The Greater Pittsburgh Festival of Books is one of many ways the Library is working together with our community and taking action to close literacy gaps.”
For interested media, the announcement will take place at 12:45 p.m. at the front steps of the Library, main entrance.
