A grandma’s kitchen is magic. It’s where flour and apples turn into a gooey, warm apple pie. It’s where sauce-stained recipe cards are rarely pulled out – she knows how to make the perfect spaghetti sauce by heart.

Chris Fennimore’s Southern Italian grandma performed cooking miracles every single day in her tiny Brooklyn kitchen. It was where she taught a young Chris how to shape the perfect meatball. They have to be the exact same size. Chef Daniel Agüera would sit at his Spanish abuela’s kitchen counter with his sketchpad, drawing her as she washed, prepped and chopped ingredients in silence. Life was never the same after his grandma let him make macarrones con chorizo (penne pasta with chorizo sausage) for the first time. Cook from the heart; trust your senses and skills, she told him.

Together, Fennimore and Agüera, who now call Pittsburgh home, have created a collection of recipes and stories that come straight from their grandmas’ kitchens. This is no-frills food – satisfying flavors and comforting textures sans expensive ingredients or complex preparation.

Simple Pleasures: Recipes and Memories of Real Food (St. Lynn’s Press, December 2017) is all about good food with heart: simple recipes with simple ingredients that bring back the “simple pleasures” of cooking and eating.

The book features 80 easy-to-prepare recipes – test-kitchen-approved and with mouthwatering photos for every recipe. Fennimore, a well-loved Pittsburgh public television personality and home cook, and Agüera, a trained and world-traveled chef, bring together their families’ best-loved comfort food traditions (including some American classics) into one delicious recipe book. Simple Pleasures is a celebration of “food memories” where the aroma of garlic and onions sizzling in olive oil means a happy belly and a happy heart.

What others are saying about Simple Pleasures:

“Chris and I have cooked many recipes together, but we really bonded behind the stove when we shared our family food stories and our grandmothers’ recipes. Congratulations, Chris! You have put all of those wonderful and deliciously simple recipes in a must-have cookbook, along with the added flavors of Chef Daniel Agüera. Simple Pleasures is a collection of simple, delicious recipes and memories.”
~ Lidia Bastianich, host of PBS’s “Lidia’s Kitchen,” restaurateur, author of Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine and other books on Italian food traditions

“Simple Pleasures is more than just a cookbook; it is an endearing collection and connection to food as it should be – memorable home cooked dishes made with everyday, quality ingredients that are simply cooked to bring out real, honest-to-goodness flavor with minimal effort.”
~ Mary Ann Esposito, host of PBS’s “Ciao Italia” and author of Ciao Italia Family Classics

“This is a cookbook for you and me – accessible food, with recipes that you don’t have to go to chef school to be able to prepare in your own home. The promise of pleasure comes from big flavors of dishes passed down from the authors’ Italian and Spanish grandmothers.”
~ Janet Mendel, author of Traditional Spanish Cooking and other books on the cuisine of Spain
